Due to their effort, determination, and dedication to the citizens of Novi and the staff of the Novi Public Safety teams, Police Officers Ryan Haney, Steven Finlayson and Christopher Clark were honored as the April 2020 Novi Public Safety Employee of the Month.
On April 24, 2020, at 9:15p.m., Officers Haney, Finlayson and Clark responded to the 29000 block of Carousel Street on a report of a male and female fighting in the street. While officers were in route, the caller reported that the female asked the male if he was going to shoot her. Upon arrival officers located the subjects in question and began ordering the male subject onto the ground. The male subject disobeyed the officers' commands and began reaching toward his right pants pocket. The male subject began walking away, continuing to disobey officers' orders to get on the ground. The male then reached into his pants pocket, stared at officers for a moment, then fled on foot. Officers began pursuing the male, at one point deploying a Taser at the subject. The Taser was ineffective and the subject continued running. Officer Haney was able to tackle the subject to the ground. Officer Clark and Officer Haney were able to place handcuffs on the subject. Officer Finlayson searched the subject and found an unregistered .22 Caliber Jennings J-22 pistol in the subject’s right pants pocket. The subject was charged by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for Felon in Possession of a firearm, Felony Firearm, CCW Violation and Resist & Obstruct and is pending his court appearance.
Officers Haney, Clark and Finlayson are to be commended for their fine work with taking a felon into custody, who was illegally carrying an unregistered firearm. All three officers acted quickly and appropriately during this intense, quickly evolving situation to protect the victim and the community from harm.
