Novi man, Farmington Hills woman killed in four-car crash on I-75 near downtown Detroit
A Novi man and a Farmington Hills woman died in a multi-car crash on I-75 near downtown Detroit, Michigan State Police said.
Michigan State Police (MSP) said Detroit Regional Communication Center was notified of a multi-car crash “with injuries” on southbound I-75 at Mack around 3:05 p.m. on Sunday, February 23rd.
Troopers arrived on scene and learned there were “fatalities,” MSP said in a statement posted on social media.
Their preliminary investigation revealed a 58-year-old woman driving a 2001 Ford Crown Vic in the left lane struck a 2021 Chevy Traverse that was slowing or stopped in traffic, forcing the Traverse into a 2022 Kia Telluride. The Kia then struck a 2024 Jeep Wrangler.
The crash involved a total of ten people between the four cars, according to MSP.
They said the Ford carried a total of two people; the Traverse, three; the Telluride, four; and the Jeep was occupied by only its driver.
“The at-fault driver did not brake prior to the crash,” MSP said in their statement.
A 56-year-old Farmington Hills woman (a passenger of the 2022 Kia) and a 50-year-old Novi man (the passenger in the Ford) were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their names were not released.
MSP said the other people involved had “minor injuries.”
Police shut down the freeway for on-site investigation. The investigation pends vehicle inspections, medical examiner and reconstruction reports; MSP said.
MSP said they will send the investigation report to the prosecutor’s office when it’s complete.
“It is important for all drivers to remember that every time they get behind the wheel, they are not only responsible for themselves and their passengers, but others they share the road with as well,” First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said. “Driving requires all of our attention, all of the time. Driving conditions can change in a split second and if drivers are not paying attention, it can be deadly.”
