Tierra is a bright, ambitious young woman who had aspirations of working in the media but wasn’t sure how to start. She wanted to make a difference in her community by using her talents to engage, inform, and educate people about public events and news.

She had recently graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelors of Arts degree but had no work experience. She wondered how she reach her dreams. Tierra decided to reach out to Oakland County Michigan Works! Novi where she was matched with caseworker, Michelle York.

"Tierra took the initiative to research internships that interested her, she was prompt with her follow up, and was actively engaged with her coworkers and colleagues,” Michelle said. Tierra was enrolled in our Oakland Next Program where she was offered and accepted the opportunity to intern for the City of Novi working closely with marketing and media personnel. Tierra created content utilizing pictures and video to promote local parks including her favorite, the Butterfly Garden.

While Wayne State University gave Tierra the foundation she needed to get started, her internship provided her the opportunity to learn and experience updated and advanced technology. The working knowledge gained provided the skills many employers pursue when interviewing potential new hires.

“During my time as an intern for the City of Novi, I learned many skills that have helped to propel my career forward," Tierra said. Those skills included learning Adobe Premier and Photoshop software which she still uses today.

Tierra felt encouraged and supported throughout her time as an intern not only by the City of Novi but also by the Oakland County Michigan Works! Novi center. Once her internship was complete, Tierra went to work for Beasley Media Group which oversees the marketing and media management for several of Metro Detroit’s favorite radio stations including Channel 95.5, Mojo in the Morning, and 105.1, The Bounce.

She is confident that she will continue to build upon the foundation established in school and through Michigan Works! as she continues to work hard and gain experience in her field. She has shown remarkable adaptability and growth since she first came into Oakland County Michigan Works! for guidance. Without that help, Tierra wonders what her life would look like today.

“I would encourage anyone who is considering a new career path to contact Michigan Works. They gave me the tools and encouragement to make achieving my dream a reality.”
