A splash pad may soon be coming to Novi thanks to the family of former Fox 2 Detroit meteorologist Jessica Starr (Rose).
Carol Starr, Jessica's mother, shared the family's vision with the Novi City Council on Monday night, which includes a large fundraising component.
"We wanted to have a place where her family could go and she could be remembered in a positive, happy, fun environment," said Carol. "One of the things her son and daughter said was a splash park so we though what better place to be than with laughing, fun children and sunshine."
Jessica Starr died in 2018, and Carol said up until this point the family wasn't ready to do anything. Seeing as Jessica's family, husband Dan Rose and their two children, live in Novi near Bosco Park - the proposed site of the splash pad - it made perfect sense.
The proposed splash pad, which included some design ideas from the Starr children, will feature a 3,200-square-foot spray area with weather-themed amenities. It will be operated remotely and sensors will activate the water. The pad will be accessible to visitors of all ages and abilities.
The Starr family is partnering with the
Novi Parks Foundation on fundraising, with the expectation of raising more than $400,000 for initial construction.
The proposal remains in the preliminary stages and more will be shared in the near future on cost estimates, site plan, and operation details.
"I can think of no better avenue to express her joy and zeal for life then to create something like this where kids will laugh and enjoy themselves for years into the future," said Mayor Bob Gatt. "It is something that will live on forever."
