The Family Self Defense Center is proud to celebrate its 28 year anniversary and is especially happy to have been a partner with the City of Novi for the past 12 years. Our dojo teaches traditional Isshinryu Karate to all ages under Master instructors; Grand Master Z (9th Degree Black Belt) and Master Chris Szelap (7th Degree Black Belt). We have been chosen as the Top Five Isshinryu Dojo in the country twelve times by the Isshinryu Hall of Fame. Our founder; Grand Master Z was inducted into the Isshinryu Hall of Fame in 2016 and Master Chris was inducted into the Midwest Women’s Martial Arts hall of fame in 2012.

Additionally, many of our students have also been awarded national recognition for their commitment to the sport and their local community. Students have also won hundreds of trophies at various tournaments. Our winning record is due to our commitment to students and their goals, preparing them to succeed every step of the way.

F.S.D.C promotes a family friendly atmosphere which provides students with an appreciation for the traditions of martial arts, provides them with discipline, and gives them confidence to achieve their goals inside and outside the dojo. The teaching staff is made up of over 25 certified black belt instructors. As a dojo family we encourage our students to get involved in the local community. We consistently participate in city parades on Memorial Day and Labor Day, entertaining people with demonstrations and the fan favorite dragon. Our Students also volunteer at Light Up the Night and our partner charity; Families in Defense of Youth gives to local charitable efforts such as Novi Youth Assistance.

The Family Self Defense Center accepts all students regardless of age or ability. We are committed to our dojo family and the wider Novi Community, fostering in our students the same commitment so we can all succeed together. We look forward to a continuing relationship with the City of Novi so we can provide instruction to all who wish to learn.
