There's a new sign on the building at Grand River and Meadowbrook. It features a shark fin and the words Akula Taekwondo.

Curious what's behind the sign? On December 2, 2019, Akula Taekwondo opened its doors to the Novi community.

Akula Taekwondo is a traditional martial arts school with classes for young children (ages 4-6), children (ages 7-12), teens, and adults. On weekday evenings and Saturday mornings, students stream in the dojang with big smiles, eager to jump on the mat.

“They never want to skip a class,” says one parent. “It’s a nice community,” adds another.

Owner and head instructor, Joseph Tegler, is an enthusiastic teacher who is passionate about Taekwondo. Akula’s curriculum includes training in poomsae (forms), sparring, martial arts weapons, breaking, and self-defense. Outstanding physical fitness and mental fortitude result.

“We challenge our students to attempt more than they think is possible,” said Tegler. “Students of all ages discover the best of themselves through training in Taekwondo.”

Akula Taekwondo offers a stable, family-oriented environment, and supports students in achieving personal goals, both on and off the mat. The practice of martial arts demands respecting others, encouraging and supporting fellow-students, and celebrating peers’ successes. Akula’s diverse student body shares healthy habits and attitudes, and grows together as individuals and a community.

And why is the school called Akula? “Obviously, I’m passionate about Taekwondo and the martial arts. I also love fishing, snorkeling, and water-skiing - pretty much everything on and in the water. When choosing a name for my school, I gave a nod to my Ukrainian heritage and to my love of the sea. Sharks are amazing animals: strong, smart, fast, and brave. Plus, Akula is a cool name," Tegler said.

Akula Taekwondo serves families from Novi, South Lyon, Farmington Hills, Walled Lake, Wixom, Northville, Livonia, and surrounding areas. Through martial arts training, students cultivate discipline, focus, and respect. Thus, Akula martial artists develop foundational skills for success in life. Learn more and register for classes at
