Construction Update

Novi's Top Traffic Problems

It's interesting to note that many of these issues are Road Commission for Oakland County Issues. It's a shame that most of the issues require low-cost solutions that have deified the road planners for years. Here's proof that it doesn't take billions to "fix" roads...

1.  Grand River Too Narrow
Grand River is only one lane in each direction from Novi Road east to the city limit.  It's wider to the west, which makes little sense.  This is a 35-year-old problem.

2.  Haggerty Road Too Narrow
Haggerty Road goes from one lane to two lanes in each direction, back and forth, from 8 Mile Road to Grand River.  South-bound south of Nine Mile, one lane abruptly ends into a power pole with little warning.  A relatively small expenditure would smooth this problem out and eliminate a huge traffic hazard.

3.  Ten Mile Road Too Narrow
There is far too much traffic on Ten Mile Road, but, area residents just don't want it wider.  It should at least be widened near the Novi Civic Center and the High School.  Also, traffic would move to Grand River if #1 and #4 were corrected...

4.  Traffic Lights at Grand River and
      Novi Roads

The timing on these lights hasn't made sense for many years.  Traffic simply does not move here due to short light cycles, and left-turn first arrows.  An traffic engineering disaster that would be easy to fix.

5.  Traffic Congestion at 8 and Haggerty
Long a busy intersection, continued development in the area has caused south-bound Haggerty road traffic to back up dangerously. An additional right turn and left turn lane are needed here urgently.

6.  Nuisance Traffic Lights
Examples abound of new traffic lights that, while mostly necessary, are mal-timed and stymie traffic throughout the city.  Another easy to fix problem that defies the road engineers.

7.  Twelve Mile Road Traffic Lights
There are far too many unnecessary traffic lights on Twelve Mile Road.  Thanks to RCOC for more wasted dollars on unnecessary, traffic-congesting signals that no one really wants, or needs.

8.  Unreasonable Speed Limits
Speed limits too low on Nine Mile, Eleven Mile, and Meadowbrook. Also, speed limits too fast on Grand River east of Novi Road, on Ten Mile Road near the high school and Novi Civic Center, and on Novi Road near the malls.

9.  Nine Mile Road
Nine Mile Road is in bad shape west of Haggerty Road, while the City of Novi merrily repaves little used residential streets.

10.  Novi's Road Bonds
Repave residential roads and a other city maintained roads?  Millions.  Being stuck in traffic in Novi during and even after all the construction work?  Priceless.
