NOVI, MI - Fox Run retirement community’s Donald "Hoppy" Hanson (U.S. Navy Commander, retired) is seen in photo receiving an award from Admiral James McNeal, thanking him for his work with Project Handclasp.

Commander Hanson, along with his late wife Jan, founded Project Handclasp, which delivers food, clothing and medical supplies on Navy ships to those in need worldwide.

Commander Hanson also received a State of Michigan Special Tribute honoring his service in WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. State Majority Floor Leader Mike Kowall presented the legislative citation.

Commander Hanson once returned from a mission with more than 300 holes in his plane from enemy fire. He had a penchant for flying low, earning the nickname "Hoppy" from fellow pilots.
