Rep. Kathy Crawford supports better educational choice for students
Merit Curriculum legislation approved by State House
March 31, 2017

LANSING, MI - State Rep. Kathy Crawford (R-Novi) voted for three bills in a Merit Curriculum legislation package, giving high school students and their families added options toward graduation as well as post-high school career preparation.

“This legislation gives more control to the students while also helping our state get more professionals in skilled trades and information technology careers,” said Crawford said, who also serves on the House Workforce and Talent Development Committee which approved the legislation on Tuesday. “Our education system is based on preparing high school students for life after graduation. This allows better opportunity to meet that important goal on a student-by-student basis.”

The legislative package will okay statistics and computer coding to count toward graduation requirements, and give students an option to fulfill a 21st Century Skills requirement by completing a combination of career/technical education (CTE) or visual/performing arts courses.

“My vote was to help our students today prepare for what’s available tomorrow,” Crawford said.

House Bills 4315, 4316 and 4318 advance to the Senate for consideration.
