Mall smash and grab jewelry heist thwarted by security and Novi PD

NOVI, MI - Novi PD reports that on Wednesday shortly after 5:00 p.m., two Detroit teens, ages 17 and 18, entered Tappers Diamond and Fine Jewelry at Twelve Oaks Mall. One of them removed a large hammer from a shopping bag and smashed a display case containing Rolex brand watches.

One suspect immediately fled when confronted by Tappers Security and was apprehended by Novi Police Officers in the mall parking lot. The second suspect was apprehended by security near the store.

There were no injuries to the store employees, the suspects or police officers. The suspects both fled before they had actually removed any property from the store's shattered display case.

The Oakland County Prosecutors Office has authorized the following charges against both teens:

1.  Conspiracy to Commit Larceny over $20,000 punishable by up to 10 years incarceration and / or $25,000 fine

2.  Malicious Destruction of Property over $1,000 punishable by up to 5 years incarceration and / or $10,000 fine

3.  Conspiracy to Commit Retail Fraud – 1st Degree punishable by up to 2 years incarceration

Video arraignment of the suspects is slated for 11:00am today.
