Novi School Board Treasurer earns “Master” Member Award

NOVI, MI - Dennis (DOC) O’Connor, Treasurer of the Novi Board of Education, received the “Master Board Member Award” from the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) at last Wednesday’s Oakland County School Boards Association (OCSBA) Trustee Awards Ceremony at White Lakes Oaks Park in White Lake Township.

O’Connor has served 7 years on the Novi School Board. He first was elected as a Trustee in November 2008, and was re-elected to a second term in November, 2012. He was appointed the Board’s Treasurer in January, 2016. Prior to that, he served as the Board’s President in 2013-14, as Vice President in 2011-12, and again as Treasurer in 2010.

O’Connor also is an elected Trustee on the OCSBA Board of Directors. He has served on that board since March, 2012. He was elected to a 3-year term in 2014. He currently is the Vice President of the OCSBA board, and the Chair of the OCSBA’s Legislative Committee.

The MASB “Master Board Member Award” is the organization’s fourth level of professional development certification, which includes a minimum of 368 education credits. O’Connor became a MASB “Certified Board Member” in 2009, earned the MASB “Award of Merit” in 2010, and the MASB “Award of Distinction” in 2013.”

O’Connor, a 24-year resident in the Novi School District, holds a Bachelor’s Degree and secondary teaching certification in Journalism and Mathematics from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He also has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) in Marketing and Management from Wayne State University.

Earlier this decade, O’Connor also earned two educational Fellowships: National Security Forum (NSF), Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Alabama, 2011; and the Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP), Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, 2010.

O’Connor is the father of two daughters. Both are graduates of Novi High School and Michigan State University. O’Connor owns and operates a marketing/training consulting agency in Novi, after a 15-year corporate communications career as a Divisional-Vice President for Maritz Communications Company in Detroit. He began in the newspaper industry as a reporter and editor for the Observer & Eccentric Newspapers group, a parent company of The Novi News.

MASB is a voluntary, non-profit association of local and intermediate boards of education located throughout the State of Michigan. Membership is comprised of 600+ boards of education, representing nearly all public school districts in the state. MASB was officially organized in 1949 to advance the quality of public education in our state, promote high standards in providing educational programs, help school board members keep informed about education issues, represent the interests of boards of education, and promote public understanding about school boards and citizen involvement in our schools.

OCSBA is the Oakland County Chapter of the MASB. The purpose of the OCSBA is to advance the quality of public education in Oakland County through the cooperative efforts of locally-elected boards of education. The OCSBA also promotes high standards in providing educational programs and services to meet the needs of all students.
