Novi High School DECA team excels at national competition

NOVI, MI - Novi High School’s DECA team had 30 of their 115 members qualify to compete in the International DECA Competition held on April 23-27 in Nashville. Novi students joined a total of over 17,500 other students from around the country and Canada at this competition known as the International Career Development Conference. DECA is an organization of marketing and business students who compete in a variety of business and marketing related topics.

Novi High School Senior Brendan Campbell came in First Place out of over 120 finalists in the Restaurant Food Service Management competition. This is the second year in a row that a Novi DECA student has won a first place trophy in Novi’s DECA chapter since business teacher Jodi Forster started advising the group 14 years ago. Brendan’ and one of only 3 first place trophies won by a Michigan student at this international competition.

Juniors Soorya Ramappan and Trishul Kalapuram also earned medals for scoring in the top 10 in the national in their Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making competition. In addition, 8 other students placed in the top 20 in their event: Jami Fu, Lahari Vavilala, Gustav Rossner, Jagjeet Wani, Robert Xu, Sai Gotor, Aditya Chitta, and Vivek Chinimilli. Senior Abhi Samantapudi was reelected as the Michigan DECA State President for the 2016-17 year after serving this year as the President.

DECA has a total of over 212,000 members worldwide this year, and approximately 17,500 competed at this international event.
