Novi High School Broadcasting Students Win State Awards

April 30, 2008

Students in Novi High School’s radio and television program have been recognized recently for their achievements by several state broadcasting and journalism groups.

The Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation and the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association honored the school’s live daily television newscast, The Cat’s Eye, as one of the top newscasts in the state. The program received second place in the MABF’s annual competition, and first place from MIPA.

The MABF also recognized The Cat’s Eye team for their community activities. Specifically named in these honors were Heather Donohue, Rob Low, Christopher Gray, Courtney Morelock, and Brooke McKnight, along with the entire Cat’s Eye team.

Sara Snyder, a junior, received first place honors from MABF and second place from MIPA for her short feature program, “Life, Love, Home,” a close look at the Ronald McDonald House charities in Detroit and Ann Arbor. Sara also took first place from MIPA as Best Studio Talent in the state.

Sandon Voelker, a senior, won first place from MIPA for his opener production for the Cat’s Eye, and also took third place for his talk show opener for “Outside the Bubble.” An opener is the title sequence that is shown at the beginning of a program.

Heather Donohue, a junior, won third place in this year’s MIPA competition for Best News Anchor. This is Heather’s first year in broadcasting. Christopher Gray, a sophomore, won second place honors in News Feature from MIPA for his in-depth report on severe winter weather.

All of our entrants in radio competition through the Michigan Association of Educational Broadcasters won awards this year:

  • Senior Mike Marsoupian won a Gold Award for interviewing, based on an excellent interview with members of the school theatre program.

  • Seniors Matt Schaffer and Collin Hinman won a Bronze Award for basketball sportscasting.

  • Collin Hinman teamed up with senior Rob Low to win a Silver Award for sportscasting during last fall’s football coverage.
