Novi students again do very well on state MEAP testing
April 9, 2008
The State of Michigan yesterday
released the results of the current year's MEAP testing for grades 3
- 9, and as in past years Novi's students did very well. In fact,
Novi students in every grade exceeded the state average in every
category.
The most significant difference was
evident in grades 3 - 5 in the writing category, where Novi students
were 20+ percentage points over the state average. Novi's 9th
graders also excelled in Social Studies, 22 percentage points over
the state average.
Today's
Detroit News reports that Novi
Schools hired a writing coach, and that writing workshops have
helped Novi's students. In an editorial today, the
News also reports that "Writing is
a leading predictor of success not only in high school but in
college and careers." The test results certainly indicate that
writing skills are an important priority for Novi's kids.
Novi Community Schools Superintendent
Peter Dion notes of the results, "Parents have been active partners
in helping us understand the process of writing and how students
learn to write. And we all know, better writers make better readers.
It's further affirmation of our commitment to quality education in
Novi. Our expectations continue to remain high."
Dion went on to state, "Congratulations to the students, staff, and
parents for their efforts to the importance of teaching and
learning. I believe it is one of the reasons that sets Novi apart
from other districts. The partnership we have with parents and
community with a focus on student achievement makes Novi Schools a
great place to learn, live, and raise a family."
The chart below shows Novi's scores
for each grade and category (the percentage of students meeting or
exceeding standards), and under each Novi score the state average is
shown. All data is from the State of Michigan Department of
Education's
website.
