The New Delta (2+2=5)
April 16, 2008
Delta and Northwest Airlines have been in merger
talks in an effort to improve its odds of survival
in an industry that has struggled in recent years.
The idea is the two airlines will be able to utilize
scales of economy and according to a Northwest
executive it will be a "merger by addition." The
idea is that two plus two will somehow add up to
more than four, a hope that has often driven airline
mergers in the past, with mixed results.
There's no guarantee that the merger will succeed,
especially given the state of the economy, sky-high
fuel prices and looming labor issues. But there's
very little doubt that Delta and Northwest have a
better chance of overcoming those challenges
together than apart.
There can be strength in size and the millions in
cost savings.
