A Year in Novi

12/29/2007

It's been another busy and exciting year in Novi, and things are looking good for the People in 2008. In our opinion...

Person of the Year: Novi High School Principal John Lawrence. This man quietly goes about his (not so easy) job of running one of the nation's top high schools, and is well respected by students, teachers, parents and the community. If someone makes something look easy it's because they are good at it, and Lawrence is very good at what he does.

Community-Oriented Persons of the Year: Everyone involved in supporting Novi's library bond proposal and getting it passed. Now the People of Novi can look forward to the library that the city needs, and deserves.

Dumb Criminal of the Year: Novi teen Roger Crowe scribbled a threat on a school restroom stall wall, and was busted within minutes. He'll spend 18 months on probation for his disruption. It was one of at least four threats made against Novi's schools during the year.

Dumb Idea of the Year: The City of Novi supports and advertises equestrian programs in Japanese. This is the United States people, and government should not be supporting foreign languages, period. Chalk this one up to being overly politically correct.

Entrepreneur of the Year: "Mr. Moe" Leon of Moe's on Ten and Moe's on Wixom. This guy consistently makes everyone feel welcome, and always gives back to the community. And his food's not bad either!

Little Things of the Year: City Council wisely widened Haggerty Road from 8 to 9 Mile, an inexpensive project that helped to smooth out traffic on one the city's busiest roads, and Lions QB Jon Kitna holds a pep rally at a Novi church that was very well attended by Novi and Northville kids.

New business of the year: Nordstrom's and a couple dozen other new stores at Twelve Oaks Mall give the 30 year-old facility a new look and ensure Novi's big mall remains number one in the region.

Newsmaker of the Year:
Home values continued to fall, and homes for sale and foreclosed increased as Novi and the rest of Michigan suffered through another year of economic down-turn.

Over-used Phrase of the Year (we hope we don't hear in 2008): With all due respect...

Public Servant of the Year:  The Voice of Novi, Ms. Sheryl Walsh. Always smiling and always promoting Novi. What would Novi be without her?

Unsung Hero of the Year: Sen. Nancy Cassis gets bill after bill through Michigan's Senate, and they actually make sense for the People. This is one sharp lady!

Website of the Year:  Novi High School Football's website, set up by Detroit Lion's numbers man Willy Mena, is a top-notch site many pro teams would be envious of.

Weird News Story of the Year: The Zamboni at Novi Ice Arena caught fire at center ice and shut the place down for a week. Days later, a power failure melted the ice and shut the place down again.

Wildcats of the Year: The Novi High School Girl's Soccer Team won the State Championship for the third straight year! Way to make Novi proud ladies!

Winners of the Year: Council Members Bob Gatt, Kathy Crawford and David Staudt, and Mayor David Landry. For the first time in Novi history, an unopposed election as no one was willing to take these folks on. And best of all, no election lawn signs in town!

We the People are very pleased with the direction Novi has been heading in the past year. We are blessed to have so many quality leaders in town, and the results show.

We have much to look forward to in Novi for 2008.

Happy New Year folks!
