Consolidate School and Regular Election Days

10/25/07

The Novi Community Schools have scheduled a public hearing for Thursday, November 1 to discuss the date on which school elections should be held annually.

Currently, school and general elections are held on different days - school elections in May and general elections in November.

Consolidating the elections would save money, increase voter turnout, and would also save voters an extra trip to the polls.

Having separate elections puts more focus on schools issues, and allows for the election of school board members during the summer - when the school board isn't busy. This means no changes in the school board during the school year.

We the People believe the economic issues and likely increase in voter turnout far outweigh the minor disadvantages of holding school elections in November. Novi's School Board should do the right thing and move Novi's school elections to November.

It's not a lot of money, but given the current state of Michigan's budget it makes little sense to spend any money unnecessarily.
