A Year in Novi

1/1/2007

It's been another busy and exciting year in Novi, and things are looking good for the People in 2007. In our opinion...

Community-Oriented Person of the Year: Kathy Crawford retired a couple years ago, but you'd never know it. This is one lady who knows how to keep busy for the good of all. Thank you for all you do Kathy.

Dumb Criminals of the Year:
Two Novi teens started a fire in South Lyon High School that caused significant damage to the auditorium and shut down the school.

Dumb Idea of the Year: Working on I-96 and M-14 at the same time was a traffic disaster over the summer, caused several car crashes, and caused traffic jams locally as motorists tried in vain to find a new trail to the west. Thanks, MDOT.

Fond Farwell: City Manager Rick Helwig and long-time Novi Fire Chief Art Lenaghan both retired in February. Big shoes to fill...

Little Thing of the Year: Keyford Towing offers you and your car a ride home during the holidays if you're too inebriated. Great idea guys!

Losers of the Year: The Novi City Council obstructionists who have raked the city and police department's good name through the mud in an attempt to stall the building of a firing range, among other things. Folks, moving targets are hard to hit, even for Novi's finest.

New Word of the Year: CAVE people: Citizens Against Virtually Everything,
coined by Dave Staudt.
 MORE

Newsmaker of the Year:
Redistricting of Novi's elementary schools went a lot smoother than most people expected. Well done, Mr. Dion and all involved!

Person of the Year: New Novi City Manager Clay Pearson has filled some big shoes admirably. We are fortunate to have him in town, keeping an eye on all things Novi.

Public Servant of the Year:
Maryanne Cornelius, Novi's affable City Clerk, who always manages to make elections look easy.

Unsung Hero of the Year: Novi High School teacher Robert Smith - Oakland County Cross Country Coach of the Year. His team finished second at State Finals, and first academically in the state. After a quarter century of teaching and coaching, this guy still keeps up with the kids, and he cares.

Website of the Year:  The City of Novi's new website, which now enables the People to watch all or part of City Council meetings to get the real story as it really happened.

Weird News Story of the Year: Former Novi resident Mario Fundarski runs for Mayor of Dearborn and says he'll tax the jet airliners that fly over his city. So long...

Winner of the Year: State Senator Nancy Cassis handily won reelection, with not a negative word heard state-wide. This is one sharp lady that we are proud to have representing Novi and the surrounding area.

-----

p.s. - The only negative reply we received from the 12/19 Editorial on Novi City Council Member absences stated "If a council member was late a minute or two, so what. What if they were sick or excused as the mayor says. They only say the pledge of alligance (sic) and roll call at the beginning." It was unsigned. Apparently saying the Pledge of Allegiance isn't important to this person...
