Homecoming 2004:
It's Closer Than You Think

September, 2004

Fall is here and change is all around at Novi High. The building is progressing with the Atrium now open and lunch is much brighter with the sun streaming in through overhead skylights. Football games are played under brisk evening skies and stadium lights, and homecoming is fast approaching.

Homecoming, a week of daily events for the students that begins October 4th and culminates in a pep rally for everyone at the end of the week. Class nominations for the homecoming court will be announced and voted upon. At the Friday night football game (vs. Hartland) the King and Queen will be crowned amidst a cheering crowd. They will join other students for a walk Saturday morning in the annual parade.

Led by the Wildcat band, this year’s parade will have a new route for the class floats to traverse, beginning at Parkview Elementary, and proceeding down Taft Road to Novi High School. Many of my fellow classmates are busy spending hours preparing all the details of these colorful and clever floats depicting this year’s theme of games. At the conclusion of these activities, the real action gets going… preparing for the dance.

After weeks of dress shopping, selecting jewelry, and searching for that perfect date, the ladies can now get down to the business of making the transformation from high school student to fashionable date. The days of hunting around the mall for that perfect Jessica McClintock dress are over, replaced with appointments at the salon. Hair, nails and makeup application are on the agenda for the day.

While the ladies are inside getting everything together, the guys are outside feverishly attending to preparing the car with a spotless wash and vacuum. There will be a few couples who arrive in the ever-popular Hummer Limo, but for that you’ve got to have some bling-bling, and most will save that for the prom next spring.

For all three of my years at Novi High we’ve had a great evening. Yeah, we bombard area restaurants with our dinner reservations, but in the end everyone has a good time dancing the night away in the high school gym.

We’ve taken a long time to get here, especially for those who are seniors. We will remember all the excitement, fun and preparations as we celebrate homecoming, if it is for the first time or the last.
